Internet users in China were full of praise for a mysterious performer at the Super Bowl on Sunday, known as ‘Fruit Sister’, leaving many baffled.
It turns out, the Chinese were referring to pop megastar Katy Perry – as she’s known everywhere else – who is apparently labelled the bizarre nickname (pronounced ‘shai guo jie’) because of her frequent fruit-themed clothing.
To be fair, the singer’s wardrobe has featured strawberry bras, watermelon skirts, a dress apparently made from the Chiquita Banana lady’s hat, and who could forget the strategically placed cherries in her video for California Gurls?

It’s me! Fruit Sister! Katy Perry performing here at the Super Bowl on Sunday is referred to as a bizarre nickname by her fans in China
According to a report by CNN, Perry is not the only one with a unique Chinese moniker.
Jennifer Lopez, perhaps for more obvious reason, is known as Lord Of Butt or ‘luo ba’, or which is ironically almost exactly how they pronounce her surname: Luo pei zi.
The story of Mariah Carey’s nickname, Cow Sister, has many layers.
Fruity: Katy Perry was the talk of Chinese internet after her Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday, but by her nickname Fruit Sister
Cherry ChapStick: It’s not so surprising the 30-year-old picked up the monicker
According to the ‘Chinese Wikipedia’ Baidu Baike, it comes from an early Sesame Street duet with a cow puppet; the fact that she has a ‘giant proud chest’ following cosmetic surgery; and because her fantastic voice is the ‘cow’s vagina’ – a slang Chinese term of endearment akin to the British ‘dogs b******s’ or ‘bees knees’.
This is also why Ariana Grande’s nickname is Little Cow or ‘xiao niu’ – because she sound’s like a small Mariah Carey.
Mariah’s one time Idol rival Nicki Minaj meanwhile is known as ‘Ma la ji’ or Numbing-Spicy Chicken’ which according to one Chinese question and answer site is appropriate to her personality and appearance.
Butt Lord and Little Cow: J-lo and Ariana Grande have different assets to thank for their nicknames
Cow and Chicken: Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have probably called each other worse, while big cousin Jennifer Lawrence would probably break up the squabbling pair
Jennifer Lawrence somehow picked up the name ‘biao jie’ or Cousin from a running joke in 2011 in which Chinese poeple insisted they knew she was going to win an Oscar because their ‘cousin in the Academy’ told them so.
The boys are not without their quirky Chinese monikers either. Adam Levine has earned himself the label ‘sao dang’ or Flirty Adam, while Leonardo DiCaprio is AKA Leonardo Pikachu, simply from a Taiwanese reporter confusing his name with a Pokemon on TV once in 2011.
Benedict Cumberbatch is known as Curly Blessing or ‘juan fu’ because of his curly Sherlock do; and Justin Timberlake’s nickname of The Boss should be pretty self explanatory.

Flirty, The Boss and Pikachu: Sounds like a great band name, but its just how Adam Levine, Justin Timberlake and Leonardo DiCaprio are known in China
